The sixpence survived the mistake meant to be melted

A deformed silver coin rests beneath a spectral mint press in a dark cabinet, its rim intact around a compressed center.
Original Nogical illustration · Interpretive image, not the studied coin

Microscopy, surface chemistry and 3D profilometry found a deformed 1834 silver sixpence with a violently displaced center but comparatively preserved rim and edge milling. The combined pattern most strongly favors repeated constrained compression during minting rather than ordinary wear, corrosion or one later impact. It is a single-object interpretation: later constrained damage cannot be excluded and no archival record identifies the event.
