The molecule behind a glow breaks in the 'wrong' order

Models of the dioxetane structure behind some luminescence found that pulling force breaks its carbon bond before its oxygen bond—the reverse of the expected sequence. The pathway could inspire materials that light up when they are nearing a dangerous stress point.
