Citizens of Somewhere Else

Calling deep immersion in a fictional world ‘escapism’ gets the geography backwards. It suggests the real world is the one being avoided, and the fictional one is a lesser, temporary substitute. For a lot of people, it's closer to dual citizenship: two places, both real, both governed by internally consistent rules worth knowing well.

The appeal isn't the plot alone. It's the coherence—a constructed world where the rules of magic or physics or politics hold steady, where cause and effect behave the way they're supposed to, in a way the actual world frequently doesn't bother to. Learning that world's rules is not so different from learning any other system worth learning.

So when someone can walk you through a fictional kingdom's tax policy or a species' entire migratory pattern, they're not reciting trivia. They're describing a place they've actually lived in, at length, and know better than most people know their own neighborhoods.
