Small Claims Court, Held Internally

A friend cancels last-minute for a reason that's technically valid but doesn't quite add up. Nothing about it seems to bother them. Internally, a full proceeding is underway: was that fair, was the excuse the real excuse, does this match the pattern from three weeks ago, and if so, what does that pattern mean.

This isn't about the size of the offense. Small claims court exists because small disputes still deserve a fair hearing, even when the amount in question is modest. The internal version runs on the same principle—the stakes being low doesn't make the question of fairness any less worth resolving properly.

Most of this never gets said aloud, which is often the actual problem. The verdict gets reached carefully, alone, and the other person never learns a trial happened at all.
